Are you planning to spend your holidays to Tenerife? Are you longing for adventure? Do you want to feel that enormous adrenalin rush? If yes, then you may want to slip into your hiking boots, grab your backpack, and extend your trekking pole to trek to the top of Mount Teide.
Mount Teide is actually an active volcano located on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. At 3,718 meters, it is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic Ocean. Reaching the top of the mountain would be a satisfying personal accomplishment considering that it is the third highest volcano in the world when measured from its base on the ocean floor. Mount Teide is part of the Teide National Park, an 18,900-hectare protected area that was officially labeled as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 29, 2007. Its magnificent natural beauty makes it one of the most frequently visited national parks worldwide.
The nutrient- and mineral-rich soil around the park makes the park a perfect place to support a large array of plant species. In fact, there are 168 vascular plant species in the area, in which 33 are endemic to Tenerife.
There are forests of Canary Island Pine blanketing the volcano’s slopes. The weather at higher altitudes provide sufficient conditions for delicate species such as the Canary Island cedar to grow. Flowering plants such as white broom, wallflower, daisy, and violet, all of which have adapted to the extreme conditions on the volcano, are the dominant species.
Furthermore, the park has a wide variety of invertebrate fauna, more than 40 percent of which are endemic species. If you trek slow and observe your surroundings, you may find strange and unique spiders, beetles, hemipterans, dipterans, and hymenopterae. Birds such as the blue chaffinch, Bethelot’s pipit, wild canary, and kestrel rule the skies around Mt. Teide.
You may spot the rare endemic reptiles such as the Canary Island lizard, gecko, and skink. There are also mammals that roam around the park such as bats, mouflon, rabbit, house mouse, black rat, feral cat, and Algerian Hedgehog.
If you want to trek Mt. Teide during your cheap holidays abroad, then book your trip with Travel Republic now.
