Hiking Holidays In Egypt & Greece
When taking holidays in Egypt and Greece, more and more people are discovering the joys of hiking. These holidays are great as they revitalise your senses and make you feel much more alive. You’ll also return feeling like a new person!
If you’re stuck for ideas for where to start your hike why not try the Sinai peninsular. You will be able to view first hand, Mount Sinai, where Moses was given the 10 commandments and a ‘must visit’ when thinking of holidays in Egypt. Along the trail there is also Egypt’s tallest mountain, Mount Saint Catherine. It is named after the unfortunate Christian martyr whose remains were carried to the top of the mountain, by angels, after her execution at the hands of the Romans. You should also see the Coloured and Blue canyons – this is definitely worth a visit.
A route that’s suitable for the more adventurous and takes in the eastern coastline is the Red Seas Mountain route. The Red Sea Mountains are Egypt’s highest range outside Sinai. The going can be arduous but along the route one sees remains of the Roman Porphyr quarries, the fine red rock used extensively in sculptures and columns. Those who like a varied scenery will love holidays in Greece. The most popular places for hiking are the Central Peloponnese, Zagoria and Meteora.
You can find ‘suspended in the air’ monasteries in Meteora. Originally there were 24 but today only 6 remain. You can get an extraordinary insight into life in a Greek orthodox monastery as these are now museums. An ideal place to go hiking is Zagoria. It has a vast temperate forest ecosystem, breathtaking scenery and notable buildings. it is part of the Pindus mountain range which stretches from Albania to central Greece. Crete too has a lot to offer hikers. It can become very crowded in the high season of July and August, so try and avoid these holiday months. The Minoan sites of Phaistos and the Venetian castle at Rethymno in Crete can be ventured to via tourist trails. One of the most popular trails leads to the Palace of Knossos. The palace contains 1300 rooms, of which 800 are still open.
