Added Females From America Join The Medical Profession

American women are forcing the masses to rethink how they perceive medicine by entering into medical school in record numbers. In recent past, the division between male and female applicants was nearly equal. Cohorts of medical students were roughly 50-50 between men and women. There is currently a growing trend of more women applying than men. Read this site if you want medical jobs in information.

This can be attributed to a couple of things, one being the fact that the feminist movement has changed the way women look at their acceptable career choices. The field of engineering, medicine, and law are all seeing increases in women in the field. Not only are women applying for these spots, but the medical schools are being pressured more than ever to accept more women. Because antidiscrimination laws are everywhere these days, you will see an increase in women in fields you never thought of before.

Currently, there is no data to compare the number of women medical students versus males. We do have some numbers from several years ago that showed that more women tended to drop out of medical school but usually did so for reasons other than academics. Women who are in the medical field say that the dropout rate is now probably equal among the sexes, because women have more women to lean on than they did several years ago. Because there are so many more women in medical school, they want an end to all the discriminatory practices that were once normal everyday.

A prime example? There is the professor who opened his class by telling a joke. He felt like it was friendly to tell a little icebreaker. He says “In this list of words, which doesn’t belong – an agg, a rug, a woman, or sex” to which he answered, “sex, because you can’t beat sex”. While this is highly offensive to many women, it is actually quite tame competed with many of the other jokes and comments that women have had to endure at the hands of their male colleagues. But as women grow in numbers, these practices and jokes will soon be taboo. So will hanging up naked posters of women to prank the professor. Besides having to deal with the disgusting jokes, there was an incident involving a woman at a very large state university was not allowed to participate in a physical examination of a male patient because of the fact that he would be nude and she would be able to see his genitals. In the meantime in another classroom, the same woman’s husband was able to perform a pelvic exam on a female patient. In addition, female students are almost always required to answer a question related to having a career and a family at the same time. Males are usually not questioned on this topic. Perhaps this double-standard became a normal practice due to the overall lack of female participants appointed to the medical school faculty and admissions committees, where male professionals are still in-charge and passing on the chauvinistic ideals that educating women is a waste of time because they might decide to have a baby or cannot be counted on in surgery.

In fact, of the faculty members that are women, many seriously object to the standard admissions question about the choice between marriage or family and career, as ultimately many women have been denied acceptance to medical school based solely upon this question in the past. Certain men who are asking the questions use the female’s answer against her, no matter which way she answers. For instance, if the female indicates that she doesn’t intend to have kids, or will hire a nanny for them, the questioner will tell her she needs to be there for her children. The woman says she wants children, so the interviewer tells her she isn’t completely committed to the field.

In more and more interview sessions, it became obvious that the perception is that female physicians are not as objective as male physicians. This feeling has been called a stereotype against women. One medical student who is a female states to have seen some very insensitive women and likewise some extremely sensitive men in her time, but it was more of a personality trait and less of a biological one.

In fact, a well-known dean of one medical school has been quoted as saying that some of the personal attributes that women possess are very beneficial to the field. Because most women were taught to be caring and open to others, this will make for a good beside manner within the medical field. Meanwhile the aggressiveness of some men can prove to be a disadvantage for their patients.
