Things to do at Yosemite National Park

Whether you’re a seasoned camper or planning your first vacation in years, Yosemite National Park is the perfect place to make your escape. Activities abound year round that are suitable for every age and type. Families, adventurers, couples, school groups, and friends will all find countless ways to enjoy this amazing national treasure.

If you’ve never been much of a nature person, a great way to start your trip is by visiting a ranger’s station and learning about the park from an experienced and knowledgeable park ranger. Check out the National Park Service’s Yosemite Guide for a schedule of walks and talks led by rangers throughout the year.

Yosemite is a great place to be inspired. Artists and art enthusiasts have flocked to Yosemite Park over the years for its breathtaking scenery and idyllic atmosphere. Free art classes are offered from the spring through the fall at the Yosemite Art and Education Center, and free photography walks are offered year round. You can also take in the works of Ansel Adams and other contemporary photographers at the Ansel Adams Gallery.

For those looking to enjoy some sport on their vacation, Yosemite Valley features over twelve miles of paved bike paths in addition to the regular roads. Hikers can enjoy a number of top-rated hiking trails including wildflower walks, snowshoe, and cross-country trails that vary with the season. Favorite hikes pass through the Wawona and Mariposa Grove, White Wolf, and Tuolumne Meadows. And April through November, fishers can try their luck in Tuolumne River, Frog Creek, or Happy Isles.

Yosemite National Park is also a great place for water sports. Swimming is allowed during the summer at Curry Village in public pools and year round throughout the parks natural bodies of water (with a few exceptions.) If you’re heading to the park with family or friends, rafting down the Merced River is a great way to spend a day. Rafts can be rented at the park during the summer months, or you can bring your own.

Yosemite Park is world renowned for its rock-climbing. Seasoned climbers as well as novices will find an endless variety of climbing challenges to choose from. Yosemite Valley boasts numerous excellent bouldering locations, and for more experienced climbers, there’s always El Capitan, Washington Column, Leaning Tower, Liberty Cap, and of course, Half Dome.

If hiking and rock-climbing aren’t really your things, multiple bus tours are offered throughout Yosemite year round. Some of the more popular tours include the Big Trees Tram Tour, the Glacier Point Tour, the Valley Floor Tour, and the Grand Tour which combines highlights of each of the previously mentioned tours in an all-day excursion. Bird watching is another great way to relax in Yosemite with over 250 species of birds to look for throughout the year.
