If you are a beginner, consider signing up for an introductory class or joining a rock climbing group where there will be ample advice and people who will be able to guide you with firsthand knowledge about rock climbing.
The basic equipment for rock climbing consists of shoes, a helmet, a harness and some chalk. Rock climbing shoes are specifically designed to prevent climbers from slipping. It is important to consider the terrain you will be climbing in as well as the difficulty of the climb when buying shoes for rock climbing.
The helmet is not only necessary to protect you in the case of a fall, but also to protect you from falling objects. Before purchasing the helmet, make sure that it fits snugly and won’t fall off in case of impact. It is also important to try on the harness before purchasing it. A speciality store should be able to mimic the rock climbing environment and you should spend enough time in the harness to make sure that it will be comfortable during the climb.
Chalk is used to absorb sweat from your hands during rock climbing and thus to prevent you from slipping.
