A Parent’s Task in Helping a Child Overcome Being Sexually Assaulted
It’s very difficult for parents to accept the fact that their child may have been sexually abused; especially if they did everything they can in their capacity to stop it. It’s important to comprehend that from time to time, predators can find their way to children’s lives very quietly; it’s what they do, and it’s what they’re proficient at. Studies on humanistic therapy show that a lot of sexual abuse happen because predators know how to separate and frighten their victims, as follows, a lot of parents end up not knowing about the abuse because children are “coached” to hide it for the predators. Don’t execute identical mistakes that some parents make when dealing with the emotional trauma of their sexually abused child which is to act as if it didn’t happen. Burying the fact in denial is not going to change things for your child, and it’s not going to give your child what he or she really needs to get better.
- Slowly but surely, reintegrate your child back to the environment which he or she found to be enjoyable before the abuse happened. Don’t encourage your child to worry about, which isn’t to say that you will not educate your child how to be careful. This isn’t to say that one should not include safety measures against such abuse again; one should, but without bargaining your child’s emotional state in the process.
- Assist your child’s recovery in any way that you can. Augmenting family time like bringing back family dinners, or having movie nights and picnics can help your child find refuge in his or her family.
- Make sure that you are present in family meals and that you spend quality time with your kids so that you can explain to them what happened yourself.
- Experience the problem of talking with the adults that socialize with and are responsible for your child’s wellbeing so that the incident will not happen again.
Your child’s comfort lies in your hands; it’s better if you can understand how it funstions so that you can give your child the kind of help he or she needs to weather the aftermath of sexual abuse.
