Activity Holidays Guide : Preparing

In this part of our guide to activity holidays we look at organizing yourself prior to going on an activity holiday.

Planning accordingly for your activity holidays will ensure you will have the best time possible while you are on them. You should pay attention to your physical condition, your level of expertise in the activities you’ll be undertaking, the equipment / gear you’ll need, and what clothing you take with you.

You should begin an aerobic activity regimen, such as swimming, cycling, or jogging, for a minimum of 30 minutes per day, 3 times each week, to prepare. You should make sure you work up to a certain intensity level as you get closer to your activity holiday since you will probably be very physical through it with little down time.

Specific practicing for some activities (such as whitewater rafting or caving) might not be possible, but you can prepare specifically for others (such as rock climbing or skiing). If the type of activity you are planning to do on your holiday isn’t readily accessible, it is always a good rule of thumb to take up hiking with a backpack and biking.

Your activity holiday will more than likely require a few necessary items, so it important that you pay attention to the things your guide tells you to bring since they have been out there more than you and know what is needed. In addition to what your tour company advise you to take, you should take only the absolute basics as you’ll probably have to carry your bags (take one large one and a smaller daypack) around more than what you would on a ‘normal’ holiday.

It is generally best to wear durable, comfortable, fast-drying garments, in layers. Take rain gear, warm jackets, hats for sun protection and cold weather, long and short pants, long and short sleeve shirts, additional clothing for non-sports activities and an extra pair of shoes incase your primary pair get wet. Swimwear and sunglasses are the only other items you might need.

Check to see if you will need to bring sleeping items such as a ground pad, tent, pillow and sleeping bag, or cooking equipment, such as cutlery and food. If you don’t have some of these items, you can check to see if the activity holiday company has any to rent for the duration of the trip. Your instructor / guide will have a group first aid kit but it’s advisable to also take your own with basics like bandages, aspirin and insect repellant.
